What is all of this I’m hearing about tumblr shutting down self-injury/eating disorder support blogs?
Tumblr is doing this?
Tumblr, the website that threw such a fit and blacked out a majority of it’s users blogs for SOPA and PIPA, is censoring itself?
I am against this because:
A) Censorship of anything is ridiculous.
B) Many people, including myself, use these blogs as a kind of therapy. They use them to connect with other people feeling and going through the same things, to make sense of what they’re going through, and to find people who will accept them for who they are and what they do. Taking these blogs down would be a slap in the face to all of us. It would be telling us that we, basically, have to go at it alone because it makes other people uncomfortable.
C) Because “Tumblr lets you effortlessly share anything”. It says that right on the about Tumblr page. EVERY SINGLE PERSON I know that uses tumblr uses it to express themselves, explore their interests, and find similar people that understand them. If tumblr starts censoring blogs it will put an end to all of that.
D) There really is no reason to shut them down. If they make you uncomfortable, don’t follow them. If the pictures gross you out, don’t look at them. But don’t shut down what could be someone lifeline because you disagree with it.
If this is true, and tumblr starts censoring it’s users, I will be deleting my page for good. I absolutely love this website and would hate to see it go, but if this is what they’re going to do, they themselves deserve to be shut down.
